ANSWER STARTS HERE: It was a bad AC relay...which caused excess pressure to build up in the AC compressor...which caused the "blow off" valve on the compressor to trigger...which caused the loud noise and the oily mist I saw. It all makes sense now! And yes indeed, there is a "blow off" valve on the AC compressor.
