I was at the NRA show in Harrisburg PA in early Feb. The Marlin booth had a 39A with a JM barrel. The exhibitor said that Rem. is using up the old Marlin-made parts. It looks like a C, but doesn't have the bottom edge that you would expect.

The model 39 (Not 39A/39M) was made from 1922-1938. With a 4 digit ser # your going to be on the low end of those dates Since you rifle does not have the HS prefix on the serial number it means it will not take the high speed.22 long rifle cartridges.

Mine was serial number 270---61. According to the link, you take the first two digits and subtract from 100 to get your year of manufacture. According to a sheet, that gives production numbers made each year, for each Model 39A made from 1952 to 1975. According to your gun, someone miscounted. Or one of the other special runs, used the same serial numbers. Even though I could swear they were kept separate.

But the 39 was in priduction from 1921 to 1938. Initially serial numbers had no prefix. Then the “S” prefix followed. After that came the HS prefix. so your is in the latter part. If original, your front sight might help narrow it down but there are ni records by year matching up serial numbers. How is the bore and the condition of yours?The serial number is MR 24XXXC.
