Mar 31, 2016 · Serial Number Lookup. Greetings, I'm brand new here. I'm hoping to get as much information as I can about my Smith & Wesson .38 special revolver. It is a 5 shot and the cylinder swings out. The serial number BDV8437 is marked underneath the butt of the hand grip. It has a 2" (or slightly less) barrel. Smith and Wesson used to use actual names for the different series of guns they produced. This changed in 1957 when they switched to a model numbering system. For instance, your gun was known as a "Military and Police" before that name was superceded by "Model 10". I think it is a .38 S&W Chiefs special model 36 with 3" barrel. I cannot find any info on the serial number to determine the age of the gun. Serial #:ATF-2600-xxx on the butt. Condition seems pretty good to me, but I know little of such things.

The smaller piece is the Police Positive Special (essentially a stretched .32 frame). The larger one is the New Service. All three were offered in .38 Special.Look on the label on the box. Just to the right of the SN is a smaller four digit number. The first digit is the year of manufacture, and the other three are the absolute day of that year. They weren't made at an even x-number per year, so extrapolating your serial in that range isn't going to be exact.
