The .50 BMG upper concept is inherently pretty safe, I have no issue with it. If you really worry about the forces imparted by the round onto a standard AR lower, buy a single shot AR lower (ZEL sells one) that has been reinforced. I think a rig would run you about $1800 on the lower end, which is a great deal for a bolt action .50 if you ask me.

In an AR-15 type firearm, most of the commotion and mechanical stress takes place upstairs in the upper receiver. The AR lower doesn't see much stress.
