The Uchigatana is very light and has low requirements, buffed you can defend yourself in melee pretty well without having to put many points in dex/strength. Rush to Melentia > Rapier. you can start with the scimitar if you start as the swordsman, and that's a pretty good dex weapon for early game. You can buy the rapier from the majula blacksmith, and that thing will take you through the whole game. The spear that you can buy from the majula blacksmith is also really good.
