I tip my hat to all of the contributors. However, I'm having trouble finding an equally good and in-depth thread for the 1.8L engine's PCV system.

The valves in question have rubber diaphragms that control intake and outlet. The diaphragms were shot, allowing one of the valves to blow oil into the air intake duct.
