Thats depends on hull a little. Horizontal allows for curves in the hull should you choose to adjust brackets and allow that. Either way weight is right where the brackets are so vert or hor works. A real heavy boat perhaps vert allows a little more support from bunks between brackets but still transferring to brackets. Like.

Like I have had 4 people fishing on the boat and still able to walk the rails no problem. However having no under gunnel storage for rods drove me crazy.

Heavy hull @ 1600 lbs naked with a 17* deadrise, draft is definately not microskiffish-say 12" loaded. It was solid and dry for a 16' but not fishing friendly.
