I have a 2003 1500 carb.. and a 2008 1600 FI. although the carb one is OK..I like the FI one better. it seems smoother and warms up a lot faster. Clutch Slipping. My 2003 Vulcan 1500 Classic clutch started slipping at 38000 miles so I took it to the dealer and he replaced the clutch. I complained that the friction point was too close, about 1/4" from the handle bar grips and he told me it was because of my after market hydraulic reservoirs.

It might stall the first time. The clutch plates cling together with cold oil. I always hold my front brake as I shift into first. The soft, mushy lever. Yes it can be air in the system. Yes you need to change the fluid every so often. Yes the sight glass can be full and still have problems.1. Remove heavy cable that runs to starter from start solenoid. 2. Key on, push start button and pump should run. Maybe change fuel filter while you are in there. Fuel pump only runs if engine or starter are running. On my 01, the fuel pump comes on as soon as the key is turned.The hole in the back of your JB was probably already srarted by battyer acid, it happens. That is probably what caused the problems. Frank, I think what you are experiencing is "normal". My 1500 did it for years. I got 55,000 miles out of the first set of clutch plates. When I replaced mine, I only did the clutch friction pads and not the metal plates. They still measured within specs.
