Key on, push start button and pump should run. Maybe change fuel filter while you are in there. Fuel pump only runs if engine or starter are running. On my 01, the fuel pump comes on as soon as the key is turned.The hole in the back of your JB was probably already srarted by battyer acid, it happens. That is probably what caused the problems.
