Headed to Destin for the first time this year the last week of June. Planned our trip there specifically because we had such a bad seaweed problem at Panama City last year. Lots of friends have said Destin is typically free of seaweed but now after reading all this I am really worried. Worried enough to change our beach plans.

I manage hotels at the beach in Galveston, and they same problem exists here. This is a phenomena affecting the entire Gulf coast from Florida to Cancun, Mexico. The entire Gulf gets Sargassum seaweed starting usually in late February or march till sometimes as late as August. It makes an approximately 5000 mile trek from Africa every single year.

If I had known that there was going to be this much seaweed/algae I think we would have probably chosen a different vacation spot. The amount that washes up on the beach makes it difficult to walk on the beach in some areas, and when you shower after swimming in the gulf you will find lots of seaweed when you shower.
