John deere 318 no spark.
Aug 17, 2018 · I have a 1983 Deere 318 (Ser #229703) that has no spark. It has new plugs, wires, points, condenser, and coil, as well as a new ignition switch (all just done by previous owner). Seat and neutral safety switches have been bypassed, and I can turn the key and it turns over with zero issues.
I have volunteered to help a friend with a JD 420. It has no spark. What I have done so far: Checked plugs and wires, did resistance check on coil, 5 ohms on the primary 13K ohms on the secondary. I have battery volts to the positive side of the coil, 10.6 volts during cranking. None of those readings are enough out of nominal to be concerned about... It looks like your jumper to 12 volts is done correctly -- so if the other terminal of the coil is getting switched up and down it should provide spark.
FYI the spark plug wires on the 318 have been a problem for me in the past. I just went to like O'Reillys and purchased pre-made wire with molded ends on each end. They have them hanging up and not all the sales people know they have them!! ... Details: 1) 2012 JD X310 bought in Jan/2016 from first owner - in great shape - with ~140 hours. 2) I got carried away while power washing it a couple months ago (using Krud Kutter multi-purpose pressure washer concentrate).
PULL spark plug wires, ground circuit tester to battery neg., place other end of tester on the NEG. side of coil., Crank engine, tester should Flash. Now remove tester, install plug wires & mow until problem comes back. Complete the same test again, If light still flashes, your controller/module is good.I have a 318 John Deere that has no spark while cranking. A couple online Deere parts stores sell the Deere/NGK plug and show “standard gap .025” in description. However, the 2238 comes pre-gapped at .040, and NGK recommends not altering the gap by more than .008. Arrgh!Be sure you are testing the presence of spark correctly -- the Onan is a wasted spark style configuration and the two plugs are wired IN SERIES, so you need to ground the unobserved plug when viewing the other for spark intensity.The only reason the VTX doesnt is because the Bosch +4 plugs seem to work better in that particular application.
