The nickel has been around for over 150 years! In 1866, President Andrew Johnson approved a bill that would authorize the coinage of five-cent pieces. These five-cent pieces would be composed of nickel and copper, which is where the nickel got its name, even though the coins were made of more copper than nickel.

I don't think it was chemically affected in any way, there are dings like on any other nickel and the copper goes right through them not like it's plated or just a thin layer. If the coin acquires the dings before the environmental discoloration, the dings will show the same color. Conder101, May 5, 2015. These cents are less expensive for the Mint to manufacture, and at 2.5 grams each, weigh about 20% less than the cent previously minted of 95 percent copper and 5 percent zinc, which weighed 3.11 grams.
