Abstract. This report presents a new method of estimating prevalence that overcomes the problems associated with the old procedure; it will be adopted beginning with the Criminal Victimization, 2023 report. Limitations of the old prevalence measure are discussed, followed by guiding principles for the new prevalence measure.The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) In a typical year, the NCVS is administered from January 1 to December 31. NCVS administered to persons age 12 or older from national representative sample of U.S. households. Respondents can be interviewed in-person or by telephone, with new households interviewed in-person.An estimated 0.5% (1.2 million persons) experienced at least one serious violent victimization in 2014. In 2014, 8% of all households (10.4 million households) experienced one or more property victimizations. The prevalence rate of property victimization declined from 9% of all households in 2013 to 8% in 2014.The rate of violent victimization increased from 22.6 victimizations per 1,000 persons age 12 or older in 2011 to 26.1 in 2012. Crime not reported to police and simple assault accounted for the majority of this increase. The rate of property crime increased from 138.7 per 1,000 households in 2011 to 155.8 in 2012.
