Started with rechargeables, since I had them on hand. Got all of 23 pictures on the first set. OK, I must have the settings wrong.

I don't know much about cams, but I think shutter speed is likely part of the problem. When the cam senses something, there's a delay between that sensor input and the picture being taken.
