The bullet vendor offered a table of loads supposedly supplied by Lyman. Unique is my favorite powder for target and plinking loads in the 45-70, I usually use 13 grains with cast bullets 300-400. For hotter loads I use 2400 and for much hotter loads I use 4198 or RL7. Unique is dirty but very accurate and easy on the shoulder.

Yes Bill, W 748 is a good powder for 45-70. For top end loads. I have used it in 50 plus gr loads but the OP mentioned starting at 41 gr. he isn't developing enough pressure for a good burn. New to loading, that choice, I feel, will give you the right tools to work with and not cause dangerous levels.
