You also need the specific keys to fully decrypt the disc. Copying the file and renaming it allows VLC to read AACS encrypted discs, but does not provide the keys for full decryption. These come from MakeMKV. So starting MakeMKV hands off the keys to decrypt the bluray, then VLC has now has the spec requirements to read the unencrypted disc.
