The Shemoneh Esrei (Amidah) This is the long prayer in the middle of most prayer services - each person prays it quietly to themselves, and then the chazan (prayer leader) prays it out loud with everyone listening and sometimes joining in. The name of this prayer literally means '18', because it used to contain 18 blessings.
While praying, concentrate on the meaning of the words, and remember that you stand before the divine presence. Before beginning the Amidah, take three steps back, then three steps forward.
